LEARNER CENTERED LIBRARIANSHIP

LIS 515 Reflections and Assignments:

My LIS 515 course taught me more than I could have imagined about cataloging and systems in the library.  It was very insightful and open my eyes to some of the real details that go into library set up and organization.  Below are several reflections and assignments that I completed for my course, from how library record keeping began, all the way to developing MARC records.  Each "module" moves a little further along in the MARC process.

LIS 550 Assignments:

This course required me to dig deeper in to the Standards and Guidelines for Texas School Libraries.  I just recently became the librarian at my school in November and this course provided the perfect opportunity for me to get in there and really look at at all the aspects of the library.  I was able to truly assess both myself, as a librarian, and the library as a whole.  After carefully evaluating the space and myself using the standards and principals, I was able to see the areas I wanted to target, and improve upon.  This capstone project, in the link below, showcases how I carried out two initiatives to improve, not only the ratings of the standards addressed, but the library and campus as a whole.

LIS 540 Assignments:

This course was very beneficial.  We really did it all, from marketing the library, applying for a grant and then creating a new 21st century library design/layout, each item was relevant to what I was needing to do in the library.

The marketing plan went right along with an event I was needing to plan, it got my thinking about what our school needed and how the library was going to be able to showcase itself through the event.  Our "Reading Under the Stars" Event was a huge success and allowed me to bring some positive attention to the library.

The new library design might have been one of my favorite assignments through out this entire program.  Our library really needs a complete overhaul.  It's not really that old, our campus was built in 2005, but it wasn't designed with the 21st century learner in mind, that's for sure.  I had a great time redesigning and re-configuring our space to make it what it should be for our students.  I've applied for a grant and am hoping for funding to make this a reality.

The mock disaster grant was a challenge for me but I'm so glad we had the opportunity to do this.  I had zero experience in grant writing and becasue of that I was always hesitant to start one.  After completing this assignment and feeling more confident in my grant writing abilities I was able to write two grants for our library for the upcoming school year.  Below is the mock disaster grant created for LIS 540.

LIS 524 Library Policy Plan:

This course allowed me to create something for my library that will be beneficial for years to come.  Our school has never had any type of collection development policy or any type of plan in place.  The district does set guidelines and they do have a plan but as far as something tailored to our specific campus, nothing was in place.  Below is the plan I created throughout this course.

LIS 527 Books for Children & YA:

Is it bad to say that this course is how I imagined most of the courses in this program would be?  Reading and analyzing literature.  I was completely wrong but really enjoyed this course and getting to read so many books (I'm a librarian, of course I love this part!).  This course allowed me to study different genres in children's and young adult literature.  I enjoyed getting to go in depth into some areas I might otherwise shy away from.  Below you will see the bibliographies I created, one for children's literature and the other for YA literature.
